Bearings play an important and critical role in the railway system and are one of the essential key components in railway operation. Let’s take a look at the bearings in the railway system.

Gearbox bearings
The main function of the rolling bearing in the gearbox is to stabilize the shaft and support the transmission force. This means that it must withstand extreme loads in a complex environment. The main types are tapered roller bearings, four-point joint contact bearings and cylindrical roller bearings. Deep groove ball bearings, spherical roller bearings and angular joint contact ball bearings are used next. The bearing configuration varies; mainly
depending on the design and operating conditions of the gearbox.

Traction motor bearings
The rolling bearings used for traction motors must meet the challenging requirements of reliable operation and long service life. Cylindrical roller bearings and deep groove ball bearings are usually used here. Their calculated life can usually be greater than 2 million kilometers due to the following design. Traction motor bearings have a special cage design, require enhanced internal design, have adjustable tolerances and internal clearances and effective ceramic insulation

Axle box bearings
In freight electric locomotives, the axle box uses two rolling bearings to support the transversely configured traction motor. The axle-holding bearing directly suspends the traction motor on the wheelset shaft. To achieve a long operating life of the bearing (the rolling bearing used here should have a high load-bearing capacity. Special tapered roller bearings with reinforced stamped metal cages are usually used to carry high loads caused by vibration and impact. Specially designed outer rings with flanges or insulating layers can also be supplied on demand.

Then according to the different structures of railway locomotives, it can be divided into:

Tapered roller bearings: Tapered roller bearings are a bidirectional bevel bearing that can withstand large radial and axial loads. It is widely used on the wheel axles of high-speed trains and has good load-bearing capacity and rigidity.

2. Self-aligning ball bearings: Also called self-aligning ball bearings, which can automatically adjust This type of bearing has excellent automatic adaptability and can resist abnormal axial loads and loads in different directions. It is used in irregular stress areas in high-speed railway workshops, such as the head connection parts of EMUs.

3. Angular contact ball bearings: Unlike self-aligning ball bearings, this type of bearing has higher rigidity under radial loads and is used to withstand high speeds and large radial and axial loads.

4. Cylindrical roller bearings: Simple structure, can carry large radial loads, mainly used in areas with large vibrations, shocks and impacts. It is used on the bogies of high-speed trains and has advantages in reliability and wear resistance.

The performance of railway locomotive bearings is related to the structure of the bearings. Railway bearings need to have the following characteristics:

1. High-speed resistance: In order to adapt to high-speed vehicle driving, bearings must be high-speed resistant.

2. High-temperature resistance: Due to the long-term high-speed movement, the heat generated by friction is also relatively large, so the bearings must have high-temperature resistance.

3. Corrosion resistance: In a highly corrosive and high-humidity environment, the bearing surface may be corroded, so the bearings must also have good corrosion resistance.

4. Fatigue resistance: High-speed trains run for a long time, and bearings also work for a long time, so they need to have good fatigue resistance.

5. Wear resistance: Bearings wear when working, so they must have good wear resistance.

6. High rigidity: Good high rigidity is required under any working conditions to ensure the stability of high-speed trains.

Bearings in the railway industry are different because each manufacturing process is different and the application is different. It is crucial to find the right bearing products for the railways, high-speed trains and other railway equipment you need.
